<p>1287319 Power-actuated pipe coupling FMC CORP 30 Oct 1970 [13 April 1970] 51624/70 Heading F2G Each of a number of clamp assemblies 10, mounted round a flanged pipe 20, comprises a motor 14 for rotating an internally-threaded hollow shaft 56, a non-rotatable shaft 60 threadedly-engaging shaft 56 and connected to a toggle-linkage 62, and a pair of clamping hooks 28 connected to the toggle-linkage such that longitudinal movement of shaft 60 in one direction (away from pipe 20) causes hooks 28 to move from the clamping position shown in two steps, the first being generally parallel to the pipe axes in the direction of arrow A and the second being generally curved and away from the pipe axes. As shown, a unit including motor 14 and shaft 56 is pivoted at 48 to brackets 40, 42, secured to pipe 20. The toggle linkage (links 64, 70, 76) includes fixed pivots 68, 80, a pivot 74 to which the end of shaft 60 is connected and a pivot 32 to which the hooks 28 are connected. Pins 110 mounted on the hooks are located in slots 106a formed in links 106 pivoted at 68. Movement of shaft- 60 away from the pipe 20 moves pivot 32, and hence the hooks, to the left until pins 110 bottom in slots 106a. Further movement of shaft 60 pivots the hooks away from the pipe against the action of springs 102. Movement of shaft 60 towards the pipe causes pivoting of the hooks towards the pipe until the hooks abut flange 24 and then generally linear shifting of the hooks until pad 36, carried thereby, engages flange 24. Pad 36 is formed with variously inclined faces 36a, 36b and 36c to allow flanges 24 of various diameters and thicknesses to be clamped. In a first modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), spring 102 is replaced by a spring acting between the hooks and pivot 68. In a second modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), fixed pivot 80 and link 76 are replaced by a block secured to pivot 32 and constrained to move parallel to the pipe axis.</p> |
