The purification and decolorization of 7-[ alpha -(4-pyridylthio)-acetamido]cephalosporanic acid has been accomplished by the recrystallization of the acid from dimethylformamide (DMF) containing a quantity of ascorbic acid. The essentially pure, colorless product crystallizes from solution as a DMF solvate.
