<p>1433484 Ornamenting BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO LTD 13 June 1973 [14 June 1972] 27700/72 Addition to 1406422 Heading B6G [Also in Division B5] The surface of workpieces e.g. shoe uppers having at least a surface layer thermo-formable material is treated by screen printing an additional layer of material in a pattern thereon, which material can be bonded to the surface, causing the surface layer with the printed on additional layer to be moulded under conditions of heat and pressure using a flow-moulding die having a pattern at least a part of which corresponds to the pattern in which the additional layer is applied, the resulting workpiece having the additional layer bonded to the surface and the surface and the additional layer being moulded according to the pattern of the flowmoulding die. The additional layer may be an ink based on polyvinyl chloride plastisol. In carrying out the method preferably a machine is used having a screen support and screen locating means for locating a screen in the screen support, also having a worktable, workpiece locating means being provided for locating a workpiece on the worktable, the flow-moulding die is also provided with workpiece locating means, the relationship between the pattern of the screen and the workpiece locating means associated with the worktable being the same as the relationship between the pattern and the flowmoulding die and the workpiece locating means thereof. The position of a screen support and the position of a workpiece locating means associated with the worktable can be aligned so that a screen is located in register with the workpiece locating means. A screen support and the worktable may be provided with location holes, the screen support and worktable being fixed with their location holes and a fixed register, and the holes in the worktable being used to position the workpiece locating means associated therewith and the holes in the screen support being used to locate the screen therein. A workpiece locating means associated with the worktable may comprise a plurality of upstanding pegs over which pegs corresponding apertures in a workpiece fit. The workpiece locating means of the die may also comprise a plurality of upstanding pegs arranged to correspond to the pegs provided on the worktable and over which the corresponding apertures to the workpieces fit. Preferably the worktable is provided with suction means by which workpieces located thereon can be held for the printing operation. The flow-moulding die and the printing screen are preferably produced using a single model, the die being made by a casting technique and the screen by a photographic technique.</p> |
