Organic impurities are removed from aq. phosphoric acid solns. or salts or salt solns. of phosphoric acid by treating the soln. or solid phosphate with alkali chlorate (pref. mixed with alkali chlorite or alkali nitrate) and heating to 80-450 degrees. Used in removal of organic impurities from wet process phosphoric acid in the prod. of food-grade phosphates. Simple and economical process giving effective decolorisation of phosphoric acid and phosphates. Adsorbents such as activated charcoal or polymer resins are not required.
