The tailboard opening unit for tipper lorries has clamps (12) bolted to each upper side wall of the load carrier. Each clamp (12) carries a pivot (15) for a swinging clamp arm (13) on whose free end is a pivot (18) for a swinging tailboard arm (17). As the load carrier (22) is tipped, the pressure on the tailboard (23) caused by the load causes the board to swing upwards on the swinging arms (13,17), providing a wide opening through which the load can fall quickly. The width of the opening ensures that should the load be above the side wall level of the load carrier, the load can be dropped without it spilling over the top of the tail board and burying it in the mound of unloaded goods, to cause damage to the opening unit.
