Benzyl alcohol derivatives of the formula: <IMAGE> in which R<1> represents hydrogen or aralkyl, are prepared by way of a thioacetamide derivative of the formula: <IMAGE> in which R<2> represents hydrogen, alkanoyl or aralkyl. Benzyl alcohol derivatives of the Formula I, or their pharmaceutically harmless acid addition salts, can be used as cardiac tonics or as antidiabetic agents.
