NEW MATERIAL:Optically active pyrimidine-type liquid crystal compound of formula I (m is 1-8; n is 5-14; * is asymmetric carbon atom). EXAMPLE:5-n-Octyl-2-[4-(6-methyloctyloxy)phenyl]pyrimidine. USE:A liquid crystal compound useful for an electrooptical element taking advantage of the response of a ferroelectric smectic liquid crystal to electrical field. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be prepared, e.g. by reacting 4- cyanophenol with the compound of formula II, and converting the resultant compound of formula III successively through the compounds of formula IV, formula V, formula VI and formula VII to the objective compound of formula I.
