PURPOSE:To almost eliminate the vibration of a main spindle, enable high speed rotation of the spindle, and also simplify the maintenance of a captioned lathe by building an air bearing in a head stock and installing the spindle in the air bearing. CONSTITUTION:A head stock 41 is fixed on a bed 40 with an air bearing 42 built therein. A main spindle 54 is installed in the air bearing 42. Compressed air is blew into the bearing 42 to float the main spindle 54 at an air pressure of 61kg/cm<2>, for example, for supporting the spindle 54 in non-contact state. Since the vibration at the side of a fixing member are, therefore, not transmitted to the spindle 54, the vibration of the main spindle 54 can be minimized, and as a result, the main spindle can be rotated at high speed so that a workpiece may be cut in ultra precision. |
