Process for catalytic hydrovisbreaking of a hydrocarbon feedstock, in which: a) the feedstock to be treated is mixed with a gas containing hydrogen and the mixture is heated to a temperature of at least 330 DEG C, b)10 to 2000 ppm by weight of metal are introduced into the hydrogen-hydrocarbon feedstock mixture with the aid of a catalyst composition obtained by a heat treatment at 80 - 250 DEG C under hydrogen atmosphere of at least one metal compound, other than a sulphide, of a metal of group VIB, VIIB or VIII in the presence of an organic polysulphide and of an asphaltenic hydrocarbon feedstock, the quantity of metal being such that the weight ratio of metal to asphaltenes is from 0.05 : 1 to 10 : 1, for a period of approximately 0.1 to 24 hours, and then heating the product in the presence of hydrogen at a partial pressure of 0.5 to 20 MPa to a temperature of 260 to 450 DEG C for a period of 0.1 to 24 hours, and c) the product originating from stage b is kept under hydrovisbreaking conditions for a period which is sufficient to perform the hydrovisbreaking of the feedstock to be treated. m
