The knitting needle in accordance with the present invention is a compound needle for a knitting machine which can wind a knit loop on another knit loop. This needle comprises a needle body (2) having a hook (5) at the tip and a slider (3) fitting to the body (2) slidably in a longitudinal direction and opening and closing freely the hook (5). The slider (3) has a recess (13) on which the knitting yarn is hooked and a rotary latch (16) for freely opening and closing this recess. The opening and closing of the hook (5) and recess (13) are controlled by controlling the movement of the needle body (2) and slider (3).
