An apparatus and method for obtaining three dimensional shape information of a curved free surface which obtains image of a target by means of a vision system are disclosed. In the apparatus, a laser beam generator(2) irradiates flat light on a target(6). A laser beam driving controller(1) controls the generation of a laser beam of the laser beam generator(2). A motor(8) rotates the target(6) on a rotating table(7). A CCD camera(4) obtains image of the target(6) by irradiating the flat light of the laser beam generator(2). A motor(3) horizontally moves the laser beam generator(2) and CCD camera(4). A motor driver(9) drives the motors(3)(7) by converting a drive controlling signal into a current. An image processor(11) stores an output of the CCD camera(4) in a memory and corrects a two dimensional image data according to a three dimensional image data.
