PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the efficiency of a recording medium by replacing data at a prescribed position in compressed data with additional information generated by an additional information generating means. SOLUTION: 422-Sets of digital video signals are divided into two 222-sets of digital video signals by a video signal divider 1001. Furthermore, an additional information generator 101 generates prescribed additional information. A video signal converter 1002 adds prescribed dummy signals to a luminance signal in the 211-sets of the digital video signals to convert the signals into 411-sets of digital video signals. A high efficiency coder 1003 provides an output of compression data resulting from applying high efficiency coding to the received 411-sets of the digital video signals. A data replacement device 102 replaces the additional information generated from the additional information generator 101 with data in a prescribed area of the compressed data and provides an output of the result. An error correction coder 1004 provides an output of error correction coded formed by adding a prescribed error correction code to the compressed data. Then a recorder 1005 records the error correction coded data to a prescribed area of a recording medium 1006.
