PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a sufficiently bright color display and to display plural colors including white with the same color pixel by coloring light without using a color filter and to display desired color with sufficient color purity and to lessen the change in the display colors by temp. SOLUTION: This device has a liquid crystal cell 10, front and rear polarizing plates 20, 21, a twisted phase difference plate 22 arranged between the front side polarizing plate 20 and the liquid crystal cell 10 and a reflection plate 23 arranged on the rear surface side of the rear side polarizing plate 21. The orientation direction of the molecules on the front surface of the twist phase difference plate 22 and the optical axis of the front side polarizing plate 20 are obliquely shifted and the twist direction of the molecules of the twist phase difference plate 22 and the twist direction of the liquid crystal molecules of the liquid crystal cell 10 are reversed from each other. The twist angle of the molecules of the twist phase difference plate 22 and the twist angle of the liquid crystal molecules of the liquid crystal cell 10 are made nearly the same and the value of the retardation of the twist phase difference plate 32 and Δnd of the liquid crystal ell 10 are varied from each other by the difference within ±150nm. The value of the retardation is specified to a range of 1400 to 1700nm and the value of Δnd is specified to 1250 to 1850nm, where Δn is refractive index anisotropy and (d) is the thickness of the liquid crystal layer. |
