The invention relates to a process for joining of workpieces (10, 11), in particular heavy plates, with laser beam (12), in particular with CO2 laser beam, which is focused at a joining point (13). According to said process, the workpieces (10, 11) are advanced in relation to the laser beam (12) which in addition is oscillated, and additional meltable material (14) is supplied to the joining point (13). To join relatively large gaps in heavy plates using CO2 laser beam and independently of edge preparations with respect to deviations in dimensions and shape, to mismatches and edge quality, the process is carried out in such a manner that the additional material (14) is fed to the melt (15) of the joining point (13) in the relative advance position (20) behind the laser beam (12), and is held therein outside the laser beam (12).
