A method of enhancing performance in an animal comprising administering to the animal a bacterium capable of expressing a performance enhancing polypeptide whereby the bacterium is administered into the gatrointestinal tract and expresses the polypeptide in the gastrointestinal tract in an amount sufficient to provide increased growth rate and/or feed conversion efficiency in the animal.
