<p>An apparatus (10) and process for pyrolyzing tire chips to extract carbon black, oil, and various gases is disclosed. The pyrolysis process in effect causes a chemical change in the tire chips (16) through the application of heat. The tire chips (16) are fed into an inclined rotary kiln (14) and exposed to heat at a continuously varying temperature from a low to a high temperature at below atmospheric pressure. Within the kiln (14), the tire chips (16) are soaked in oil such that a chemical reaction occurs, resulting in a dry solid product (20) and a gaseous, vapor product (28). The solid product (20) is subsequently fed through a magnetic separator (24) which separates the steel from the char. The char can then be upgraded to yield carbon black. The vapor product (28) passes through multiple condenser/scrubbers (30, 50) to yield a purified form of oil for storage, char for conversion into carbon black, and uncondensed gas used as fuel for the kiln (14).</p> |
