PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an intermetallic compd. large in the amt. of lithium to be stored and small in the reduction of the storing amt. caused by repetition by specifying the containing ratio of magnesium and tin in an intermetallic compd. composed of magnesium and tin. SOLUTION: This invention is a lithium storable intermetallic compd. represented by the formula of MgxSn (in the formula, 0.5<=X<=3.0). The Mg raw material and Sn raw material are simultaneously charged into a vessel, and, by a mechanical alloying method, it is produced. A crystal form having a compd. phase in which the crystallinity is <=95% or having a nano-structure in which fine crystallizing regions of 5 to 1000 nm diameter largely gather, and the space between the recrystallizing regions is composed of an amorphous phase, is desirable. The granulated lithium storable intermetallic compd. is mixed with a conducting assistant such as acetylene black and a binding agent such as polyvinylidene fluoride to form into a pasty state, which is applied on an electrode substrate of copper foil or the like, and drying is executed to form a negative pole for a lithium seconary battery. The lithium secondary battery high in energy density and good in cycling characteristics can be obtd. |
