<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for improving OCR precision by using an assist channel. SOLUTION: When the primary channel of character data is received (302), encoding is defined (304) and then applied (312). In the encoding definition, characters of symbols which possibly appear in the primary channel of an electronic document are discriminated (306) and while the information amount of the assist channel is minimized, two characters which are easily mixed up during OCR processing are mapped into one of equivalent classes (308, 310) so that the possibility of arrangement in different equivalent classes is maximized. In the encoding application, respective symbols of the primary channel are related to the identifier of a group to which the respective symbols are assigned to expand the assist channel (314). This channel after being compressed (316) and encoded (318) is connected to the primary channel and represented on a hard copy document (322).</p> |
