PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable to achieve a light source of a large even area, of which a luminous face 1A emits light uniformly over a whole area. SOLUTION: A discharge cell 1 provided with a flat discharge space 2 with nearly uniform thickness, a discharge gas contained inside the discharge cell 1, and a main electrode 3 and sub electrodes 4 arranged outside sidewalls of the discharge cell 1. The main electrode 3 is arranged almost parallel with a luminous face 1A of the discharge cell 1 and covers almost the entire face of the sidewall forming the luminous face 1A of the discharge cell 1. The sub electrodes 4 are arranged at a specified insulation distance from the main electrode 3. A power source 5 supplies high frequency electric field between the main electrode 3 and the sub electrodes 4. |
