PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a dynamic range from decreasing and picture quality from becoming worse. SOLUTION: When an image is displayed on a liquid crystal panel which is irradiated with light, the luminance of the irradiation light is varied with the luminance of the whole image. Consequently, the dynamic range can be made higher than when the luminance of the irradiation light is not varied. Further, video signals applied to respective pixels of the liquid crystal panel are individually discriminated and amplified with a large amplification factor when the luminance is less than reference luminance A1 and with a small amplification factor when larger than reference luminance A2. Consequently, an image below the reference luminance A1 has its contrast improved. Even an image above the reference luminance A2 does not have its contrast lost and can be recognized.
