PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical fiber fusion splicer capable of preparing and updating data, as occasion demands, concerning a proper fusion quantity and an outer diameter return quantity of optical fibers and, on the basis of the updated data, capable of automatically performing optimum compensation for axial deviation. SOLUTION: The cores and the outer diameters are detected at the abutting part of optical fibers to be spliced, with the optical fibers aligned and heated/fused. Before fusion splicing, the fused state of the optical fibers is measured and then, the outer diameter return rate is computed from the measured fusion data on the basis of a relational formula between the predetermined fusion quantity and the outer diameter return rate. Successively, from the axial deviation data measured by the detection of the cores and the outer diameters, and from the outer diameter return rate already computed, an estimated outer diameter return quantity is determined. Thereafter, with this estimated return quantity, the aligning position of the optical fibers is shifted to carry out the compensation for axial deviation. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
