PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display element in which screen switching time is shortened and which has high display contrast by using a simple construction of components. SOLUTION: The display element has an electrochemical transistor composed of an electrochemical active element containing a silver compound as a driving circuit, has an electrolyte liquid containing silver or a compound containing silver in its chemical structure, and conducts a driving operation of a counter electrode so as to generate dissolution and deposition of silver. The electrolyte liquid of the display element contains at least a kind of compound represented by a general formula or represented by R<SB>5</SB>-O-CO-O-R<SB>6</SB>, and at least a kind of compound represented by R<SB>7</SB>-S-R<SB>8</SB>or a compound composed of MS, N.
