PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector achieving miniaturization without necessitating excess optical path length and improved in convenience during use. SOLUTION: The projector is provided with: a light source 51 emitting light; an optical conversion part 54 having a conversion part 55 for converting light from the light source 51 into a video on the basis of image data; a control part 38 functioning as a light source action control part for controlling the action of the light source 51; a projection lens 59 enlarging and projecting the video converted by the optical conversion part 54; a moving part 100 moving at least either the light source 51 or the projection lens 59 and elongating and contracting the optical path length by setting a position where appropriate optical path length to make the projector 1 project the video is obtained as a maximum elongation position; and a detection part 200 detecting the position of the moving part 100. Then, the control part 38 functioning as the light source action control part controls the lighting of the light source 51 based on the detection signal from the detection part 200.
