<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To widen the width of change of peak luminance. <P>SOLUTION: A lamp 83 emits light, an elliptical reflection mirror 82 reflects and condenses the light from the lamp 83, and a liquid crystal light valve 93 converts the reflected light condensed by the elliptical reflection mirror 82 into video light by modulation based on image data corresponding to a video to be projected to a screen, then a projection lens 94 projects the video light from the liquid crystal light valve 93 to the screen. A lamp position adjusting mechanism 91 shifts the bright spot of the lamp 83 from the first focal point of the elliptical reflection mirror and adjusts the position of the lamp 83 so that the effective light quantity of the liquid crystal light valve 93 can be decreased, whereby the width of the change of the peak luminance is widened.
