<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect characteristics of a shape profile of a rolled material after rolling. <P>SOLUTION: A method for detecting the shape of a rolled material is directed to detect characteristics of the shape profile obtained by measuring a rolled material 5 rolled by a rolling mill 1. A basis function capable of expressing a flatness pattern of the rolled material 5 is beforehand determined, and the shape profile of the rolled material 5 is measured with the basis function.
