Multifilament yarn for carpets is produced by (a) extruding a molten dispersion of polyethylene terephthalate in a polyamide in a wt. ratio of 10:90-40:60, each filament being formed from an extrusion opening with a capillary surface of 45.2-77.4x10-4 cm2, (b) drawing the filaments in a molten condition at a ratio of 70-120:1, and (c) drawing the filaments after congealing at a ratio of 3.5-5:1. The polyamide is pref. a polycaproamide with a relative viscosity of 70-100 in 90% aws. formic acid. The polycaproamide pref. contains 5-20 milli-equivalent primary NH2 groups per kg. polycaproamide. Each filament is produced from a group of three closely spaced capillaries. The molten mixt. is extended into a stationary atmosphere ca. 1.27 cm under the spinneret, this atmosphere being maintained at a temp. within the range 320-380 deg.C, which is held constant +-5 deg.C. The multifilament yarns have high uniformity and can be readily crimped. The yarns are esp. useful as carpet yarns, and had high durability high bulkiness, and are very resilient and soft. |
