1,143,332. Ammonia synthesis. PULLMAN Inc. 12 Oct., 1966 [29 Oct., 1965], No. 45677/66. Heading C1A. Fresh synthesis gas is passed to a compressor and compressed to a pressure below that of the reaction zone and is then mixed with recycle effluent gas, which still contains the synthesized product, the mixed gases are further compressed in said compressor and at least some of the synthesized product is then separated from the compressed admixed gases prior to passing them into the reaction zone. Fig. 2 illustrates a process for the production of ammonia from nitrogen and hydrogen in which fresh synthesis gas undergoes a preliminary compression in section 12 of a multi-wheel centrifugal compressor 11 and after removal of condensed water, passes, together with recycle gas containing ammonia to the high pressure section 22 of the same compressor. The compressed gases are then cooled at 27 and the condensed ammonia removed in separator 31. The gases are then heated in the heat exchange zone 45 and passed into the converter 38. After the conversion some of the ammonia produced is removed by the primary separator 49 and, after the removal of some purge gas through line 51, the effluent gas passes to the compressor for recycling. |
