[Also in Division H1] Apparatus for simultaneously detecting the temperature of, and obtaining a sample from, a bath of liquid such as molten steel or copper comprises an expendable thermocouple unit attached to one end of a tube 12 of heat insulating material and a sampling vessel 64 mounted at the same end of the tube and substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the tube, the vessel being surrounded for the major portion of its length by a heat insulating body 46. The thermocouple comprises wires 18, 20 made respectively of platinum and platinum-rhodium and disposed in a refractory tube 22 embedded in refractory cement 16 in the end of the tube 12, the wires 18, 20 being connected respectively to an alloy wire 24 (98% copper, 2% nickel) and a copper wire 26 to form cold junctions 27, 29 embedded in the cement. A connector 28 made from polymeric plastic is also embedded in the cement and is adapted to cooperate with a receptacle inserted from the free end of the tube. The vessel 64 is made from a vitreous or ceramic material such as quartz and consists of an evacuated tube lined with aluminium 70 and sealed at one end by a button 68 fusible at a much lower temperature than the vessel. The heat insulating body 46, which surrounds both the vessel and the thermocouple unit, is a non-rotatable force fit on the end of the tube 12, and its forward end is surrounded by a tape 76 forming a well for refractory cement 78 which protects the end 14 of the tube and retains fusible caps 38, 72 covering the ends of the unit and the vessel. In use the apparatus is immersed in the bath for between 3 and 10 seconds, during which time the temperature is recorded and fluid flows into the vessel and partially solidifies. The apparatus is then withdrawn, broken open to obtain the sample, and discarded. In a modification, for use in baths without a slag layer, the vessel is inverted and may be open at the top so that the liquid flows in under gravity.
