[Also in Division F1] A multi-stage centrifugal compressor comprises a number of stages which, together with intercoolers, are totally enclosed within a common casing. Four stages 30, Fig. 1, are enclosed in a casing 10 having an end closure 20 which, as shown, may be hinged at 1 to the casing. Air or gas from an inlet 23<SP>1</SP> passes through a port 23 into a chamber in the end closure 20 located behind a wall 17 and then passes via a port 87 into the inlet duct 51, Fig. 2, of the first stage 30. After leaving the impeller 37, the air or gas passes via diffuser passages 43 and intercooler tubes 71 to a water separator comprising stainless steel crinkle mesh 86 which separates and condenses moisture entrained in the air or gas. The water is drained away through a pipe 190. The air or gas enters a further compartment in the end closure 20 via ports 89 surrounding the port 87, and then enters the second stage 30 through a further port 87. Finally after traversing all four stages, the air or gas passes via a port 25 to an outlet 25<SP>1</SP>. Coolant (e.g., water) for the intercoolers enters at 120, passes between the intercoolers via conduits 125 and leaves at 130. The four stages are driven through gearing by an electric motor 7 or an I.C. engine. |
