[Also in Division C7] The position of an oxygen lance 20 relative to the slag-metal line in a basic oxygen converter 10 is determined by probes 22, 24 releasably clamped to the lance and extending below the lance, one at least by a specified distance x and the other by at least that distance. The probes form part of an electric circuit including an indicator 30, the circuit being completed as the probes become immersed in the slag layer 18 and the conductivity increasing to a maximum (shown on the indicator) when the probes touch the molten metal 16. When this reference position has been determined, the lance is raised a desired distance above the level of the metal to begin the blow. Preferably, and as shown, the probe 24 extends an arbitrary distance below the probe 22, the reference position being indicated when the probe 22 contacts the molten metal. |
