Aliphatic thiocyanates prepn

Aliphatic thiocyanates (intermediates for plant-protection agents and themselves having insecticidal and fungicidal properties) are prepd. by reacting an aqs. soln. of a water-sol. 1-8C aliphatic mercaptide (pref. an Na or K alkylmercaptide) with a soln. of a cyanogen halide (pref. C1CN) in an inert water-immiscible organic solvent (pref. CH2Cl2, CHCl3 or dichloroethane), pref. at ca. 5-25 degrees C., separating the liquid layers, and isolating the thiocyanic acid ester from the organic phase.
