Novel compounds I and their salts in which R<SP>1</SP> is 1-4 C alkylthio or halo; R<SP>2</SP> is 1-4 C alkyl; R 3 = 1-4 C alkoxy or di-(1-4 C alkyl)amino; Alk is -CH 2 -, =CHCH 3 or -CH 2 CH 2 -; and the dotted line indicates an optional bond are prepared by (a) reacting LCOOH or a functional derivative thereof with HOQ or a functional derivative thereof (L is the grouping II and Q is -CH 2 CHOHCH 2 OH or a cyclic ketal or acetal thereof, CH 2 CH=CH 2 or a 2,3 - epoxypropyl group and where necessary ring opening the ketal, hydrolysing the epoxy group or oxidizing the allyl ester, (b) reacting LCOOH with D-CH(OQ) 2 (D is a secondary amino group) or (c) reacting a compound VII with a compound VIII and where necessary in (b) or (c) modifying the group Q as under (a). Intermediates isolated include those described under parent Specification from which this application is divided and allyl - (1 - p - chlorobenzoyl - 2 - methyl - 5 - methoxy - 3 - indolyl)- acetate prepared as under (a) above. Pharmaceutical compositions comprise a compound I or a suitable salt thereof in conjunction with a suitable excipient, have anti-inflammatory effect and may be administered orally, rectally, topically or parenterally. |
