PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lithium secondary battery having high capacity and long life. SOLUTION: Graphite powders, in which the percentage of edge surfaces is increased so that lithium is easily intercalated, are used as a negative active material. Graphite crystals are specified by the degree of anisotropy of the graphite crystals which appears on an ESR pattern, and the percentage of the edge surfaces is specified by the intensity ratio of the two Raman peaks of the graphite material. This constitution provides a secondary battery having high capacity and long cycle life.
