[Also in Division F4] A finned sheet-metal article, particularly a heat-exchanger, Fig. 5, having internal fluid passages 2 bounded by a web 3, has its fins 23, 24 formed by piercing and bending tabs out of the web and elongating and thinning the tabs by extrusion. Heat-exchanger panels are preferably made from a composite sheet using a stop weld material and then opening out the passages by fluid pressure. The fins 23, 24 are formed by a manually or power-operated punch 8 with co-operating dies 10, 11 which pierce, bend and extrude the metal in a continuous stroke. In a modification, Fig. 1A (not shown), clamping plates are provided on top of the panel and above the dies 10, 11. The punch may have a round nose, Fig. 9, for bending out tabs which have been previously slit by cutting, sawing or drilling, or it may have a side cutting edge, Fig. 10 (not shown), which forms one tab only at each perforation. The fins may extend at right angles to the fluid passages, Fig. 6 (not shown), or on both sides of the panel, Fig. 12 (not shown), by using a pair of oppositely acting punches 8111, Fig. 11. Clamping dies 101, 111 are also provided. Stop weld material may be provided at the positions where the tabs are formed so that they may subsequently be opened out into multiple fins 38-11, Fig. 15 (not shown).
