A stripping mechanism for stripping an ingot E from a mould D and which is suspended from an overhead crane 22 comprises a gripper B that grips the mould D and raises it relative to a fixed ram C until the ram pushes the ingot from the mould. The mechanism is constructed around a frame A that is directly connected to the crane 22 and to which the fixed ram C is attached. Suspended from the frame A is a pair of hydraulic piston and cylinders 60, 62 that raise and lower a pair of gripper tongs 30, 32 that can be opened and closed by an hydraulic cylinder. The frame A includes a deck 14 through which the cylinders 60, 62 pass and on which is mounted an electric motor and an hydraulic pump. The lower ends of the piston rods 72, 74 of the cylinders 60, 62 are spaced apart by a guide member 84 that shrouds the piston rod 72 only and moves along the frame A by means of guides as the gripper B is moved relative to the frame A. The other piston rod 74 is shrouded by a separate tubular member 90. |
