Biodegradable washing agents comprising (1) an organic water-soluble detergent chosen from (a) R1-CH(OR2)-Ch2-SO3M where R1 = 6-20C st. cahinalkyl, R2 = 1-3C alkyl and M = salt-forming radical; (b) R1-CH(SO3M)-COOR2 where R1 = 6-20C alkyl or alkenyl, R2 = 1-10C alkyl and M = salt forming rad., (c) R1-CH(O.CO.R2)-CH2SO3M where R1=9-23C alkyl, R2 = 1-8C alkyl and M = salt forming rad., (d) RO(C2H4O)xSO3M where R = 10-18C alkyl or alkenyl, x = 1-30 and m = salt forming rad., (e) 12-24 C alkene sulphonates, (f) R1-N(R2)-CH2-R3-ZM where R1 = 8-18C alkyl, R2 = 1-3C alkyl or H, R3 = 1-4C alkylene, Z = carboxy, sulphonate or sulphate and M = salt forming rad., and/or (g) R1-Y+(R2)x-CH2-R3-Z where R1=alkyl alkenyl or hydroxyalkyl with 8-18C, 0-10 ethylene oxide residues and 0-1 glyceryl residues, Y = N, P or S, R2 = 1-3C alkyl or monohydroxyalkyl, x = 1 if Y = S, or 2 if Y = N or P, R3 = 1-4C (hydroxy)alkylene and Z = carboxylate, sulphonate or sulphate; and (2) a mixture of an alkali carbonate (I) and an alkali silicate (II) in a ratio of 3:1 to 1:3, a SiO2/M2O ratio in the (II) of 1.0 to 4 and the wt. ratio detergent: fortifier of 1:10 to 3:1.
