Ion exchanger has liquid flow downwards through a double bed comprising an upper layer of weak opposed ions and a lower layer of strong opposed ions and is regenerated at intervals by backwashing with a large proportion of the entire regenerating agent, flowing upwards through the lower layer to the boundary surface between the layers, where it is removed. A proportion of the removed regenerating agent is then cycled downwards through the upper layer and is removed at the boundary surface. Specif. a two-layer cation exchanger is regenerated with sulphuric acid and the regeneration agent removed at the boundary surface is diluted before supplying it to the upper layer. |
