<p>A preformed component 12 for use in effecting an optical connection between optical fibres F of optical cables C comprises a housing 1 in which optical conductors 2 are so disposed that opposite end parts 4 of each conductor protrude from the housing at an acute angle to one another lying in the range 0 DEG to 90 DEG ; preferably, the end parts protrude in substantially the same direction. At least each of the protruding parts 4 of each optical conductor 2 consists of an optical fibre which can be spliced to one of two optical fibres F to be optically connected. The preformed component 12 and the protected optical fibre splices 14 can be disposed in a cassette 11 in such a way that the splices are spaced from the preformed component by a distance which can be reduced to accommodate for re-splicing of any unsatisfactory splice, the protruding parts 4 of each optical conductor 2 providing excess fibre length. <IMAGE></p> |
