PURPOSE:To lower the specific fuel consumption of an engine, by recovering the pumping loss at the time of low-load operation of the engine by making a supercharger produce an output. CONSTITUTION:At the time of racing operation of an engine, throttle valves 6, 20 and an on-off valve 16 are closed completely, and shut-off valves 23, 25 are fully opened. In this state, intake air is introduced into a work chamber 12 when the work space 12 is communicated with a passage 18 on the suction side of a supercharger during the while when the volume of the work space 12 is changed from minimum to maximum. After supply of intake air into the work space 12 is stopped, intake air in the work chamber 12 is expanded adiabatically. When the pressure of intake air in the work space 12 becomes substantially equal to the pressure (negative) in a discharge passage 21, the intake air is discharged to the discharge passage 21. This is applied also at the time of partial-load operation of the engine when the throttle valves 20, 6 are opened slightly.
