PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material of herbicide, easily, in high yield, by reating 4-propenylphenol with an alpha-halogenoalkanoic acid ester, and reacting the product with an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxde in the presence of a mineral acid catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound of formula IV is produced by (1) reacting the compound of formula I with the compound of formula II (R<1> is H or methyl; R<2> is 1-5C alkyl; X is halogen) at 50-100 deg.C in a polar solvent in the presence of a base, and (2) reacting the resultant 2-(4-propenylphenoxy) alkanoic acid ester of formula III with 1.1-1.5 times mol of hydrogen peroxide solution (preferably 30-60wt% concentration) at 20-70 deg.C in the presence of an acid catalyst such as hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, etc. Preferably, the reaction time of the second-stage reaction is made longer and the temperature condition is set lower to prevent the hydrolysis of the ester group of the objective compound.
