PURPOSE:To efficiently produce a polymer having stereochemical structure of polymer side chains consisting essentially of a syndiotaction structure, by carrying out polymerization in the presence of hydrogen using a catalyst consisting of a Ti compound and organoaluminum compound components. CONSTITUTION:Styrene or a derivative thereof is polymerized. In the process, (A) a Ti compound, e.g. a compound expressed by formula I or II (R<1>, R<2> and R<3> are H, 1-20C alkyl, 6-20C aryl, indenyl, etc.; X<1> is halogen; a, b and c are 0-4; d and e are 0-3), etc., and (B) a contact product of an organoaluminum compound with a condensing agent, e.g. obtained by modifying trimethylaluminum with water, etc., are used as a catalyst compound and polymerization is carried out in the presence of hydrogen, preferably under 0.01-50kg/cm<2> partial pressure. The molecular weight of the resultant polymer can be optionally regulated according to the purpose and the polymer can be effectively prevented from sticking to the wall of a reaction vessel.
