In a hydraulic end-of-travel shock absorber for the piston (2) of a hydraulic cylinder (1) with a throttling point (29, 32), of adjustable cross-section, which is arranged at the end of the cylinder and through which the piston forces the hydraulic oil out of the hydraulic cylinder, with progressive reduction of its speed until standstill, there is proposed a simple construction, by means of which it is possible to brake to standstill, over a short distance and in an impact-free and machine-saving manner, even very large and rapidly moving masses. For this purpose, a control slide (23), which forms a stop for the piston (2), is displaceably guided in the axial direction at the end of the cylinder, said control slide sliding over a control groove (28), whose cross-section is continuously reduced to a value of zero towards the end of the cylinder and into which the throttling bore (29) opens. <IMAGE>
