PURPOSE:To obtain a sintered silicon nitride having excellent toughness and useful as a material for engine parts, turbine rotor. etc., by forming and calcining raw material powder composed mainly of silicon nitride powder and beta-silicon nitride whisker. CONSTITUTION:A sintered article of silicon nitride having an acicular beta-silicon nitride crystal structure having high aspect ratio can be produced by mixing silicon nitride powder with >=1wt.% (based on the whole composition) of beta-silicon nitride whisker and a sintering assistant such as alumina or yttria, forming the mixture and sintering the formed article by normal-pressure sintering, hot- press, gas-pressure sintering, etc. |
