The device is used for lifting and transporting a hospital bed and has a U-shaped frame (14) with each arm (16) of the U being supported on castors (68). Each arm (16) of the frame supports a vertically sliding frame (24) which has a rail (42) attached to its lower edge. These rails are spaced to match the positions of the legs and castors of the bed (12) which can be pushed sideways onto the rails.
