The plunger is composite in nature, consisting of two discrete components, a valve member and a stem, secured together. The valve member has a hard, wearresistant surface and may be entirely formed of a hard material such as a carbide or ceramic, for resisting erosion. It forms an axial bore. The stem is formed of a ductile material, to withstand bending stress. The two components may be bonded together with a sealant.
