The device monitors access areas of several storage aisles or lanes (L). The device has one or more sensor units (1,2,4) for each access area to determine whether an object passes the access area and to selectively identify given vehicles passing the areas. A separate control unit (K) is associated with each access area. The control units evaluate the output signals of the corresp. one or more sensor units (1,2,4) w.r.t. the authorisation of the object to pass through that area. If the authorisation is invalid, the control units output warning signal information. A data bus network (10) is provided. The control units associated with the access areas, and an alarm system control unit are connected to the data bus network (10).
