Liquid-crystal compounds which are usable as the basic substance of ferroelectric liquid crystal compositions, have a low viscosity, and exhibit a liquid crystal phase in a low-temperature region; and ferroelectric liquid crystal compositions containing them. The compounds are 2-(4-alkylphenyl)-5-alkylthiadiazoles represented by general formula (1) wherein R>a< is C>5<-C>15< alkyl; and R>b< is C>5<-C>15< alkyl. |
