<p>A method and apparatus enables a newly installed peripheral device (210A) such as a disk device to be used with a computer system (200) without changing the operating system (206). The peripheral device (210A) is identified as a type which is not recognized by an operating system (206) operating in conjunction with the computer system (200). A value which identifies at least one logical attribute of said peripheral device (210A) is obtained from said peripheral device (210A). A determination is made as to whether the operating system (206) and the peripheral device (210A) are compatible based on the logical attribute obtained from the peripheral device (210A). The operating system (206) and the peripheral device (210A) communicate if it is determined that the operating system (206) and the peripheral device (210A) are compatible (i.e., can operate together).</p> |
