Described is a method for determining the binding ability of a compound to bind to an .alpha.2.delta.2 subunit of a calcium channel comprising: providi ng an .alpha.2.delta.2 subunit of a calcium channel, contacting the subunit wit h the compound, and determining the binding ability of the compound to bind to the subunit.
