PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To execute an ID searching process without trouble even if a data carrier carrying out an irregular operation is present when ID search is carried out in a detection area where plural data carriers are present. SOLUTION: When IDs of plural data carriers present in a response area are searched based on the IDs each comprising plural bits and assigned to every data carrier, this reader/writer device 10 executes processes for transmitting a response confirmation signal when at least one data carrier responses, and for transmitting a receiving non-confirming signal when no data carrier responses. A response is returned from a slave machine 30 according to a response request from the reader/writer device 10 when a corresponding search pattern is present, and the ID searching operation of the slave machine 30 is stopped when the receiving confirmation signal is not transmitted.
